โฆ Synopsis
During that time he was the author and co-author of seven papers. In this period he manifested an interest in the distribution of lipids in Nieman-Pick disease, nephrosis and chronic nephritis. He also worked on the metabolism of phosphorus and wrote on lymphogranuloma inguinale.
He joined the Department of Pathology at the Hospital for Joint Diseases in New York, where his far ranging interests finally focused on diseases of the skeleton. He spent 12 years at this hospital, working in collaboration with Dr. Henry L. Jaffe. During this period he was the author of 16 definitive papers relating to the pathological aspects of skeletal disorders. For the next 29 years he published 22 papers and two important textbooks which he modestly called monographs ("Bone Tumors", the 5th edition having been completed just a few months prior to his death and "Diseases of Bone and Joints", 2nd edition, completed in 1975).
Dr. Lichtenstein's writings were lucid, comprehensive, and original. A number of new pathological entities were recognized by him alone or in conjunction with Dr. Jaffe. Among these was his description of histiocytosis X, which formulated a unified concept of eosinophilic granuloma, Letterer-Siwe disease and Hand-Schfiller-Christian disease.
