β¦ Synopsis
One girlβs adventure begins as she tries to
survive a scary night alone on the water.
Forced to leave the California beach behind to spend the summer with her grandma in rural Tennessee, Dannie is certain this will be the most boring summer of her life. Things start looking up when a group of local kids, mistaking her short hair and boyish figure, invite her on their βno girls allowedβ overnight kayaking trip. Obviously, her grandma refuses to let her go. But Dannie suspects the real reason is that the woman is afraid of the lake, only she won't tell Dannie why.
Longing for freedom and adventure, Dannie finds an old rowboat hidden behind the shed and sneaks off on her own to catch up to her new friends. It seems like a simple solution β¦ until everything goes wrong.
Dannie soon discovers this lake is more than just vast. Itβs full of danger, family secrets, and ghosts.

From the Author
I grew up in Southern California, about twenty minutes from the beach. About 15 years ago, I moved to the Nashville area of Tennessee and fell in love with this state and the people in it. When I came up with the idea for a story about a kid lost in the middle of a lake in a haunted old rowboat, I decided to set it in my new home - Tennessee. I chose the biggest lake on the map, one filled with twists, turns, and a million places to get lost - Center Hill Lake. I thought I'd make my main character a beach girl from California who nothing of lakes or how to row a rowboat but had lots of spunk and courage. I wanted this story to be spooky and fun, but it also has messages about the danger of secrets and lies. On top of all that, though, it is shares how much I appreciate the kindness, friendship, and open-hearted people that live in Tennessee. I hope that you'll enjoy Dannie's adventure.
