His eyes had regained the night vision they'd lost when the match flared in his face, and he glanced idly out the window. At first, he thought the dark figure he saw clambering out of the last gondola car in the string, just ahead of the mail coach, was a brakeman. It was about time for the crew to get on their brake stations, to stand by the brake wheels after the train topped the pass and started downslope into the Arkansas River valley. Just then, the engineer spared enough steam to give the twin whistle blasts that were a signal to the brakeman, and at the same time, a gap appeared and grew between the gondola and mail coach.
