## BACKGROUND. Rectal carcinoma patients with local recurrence are reported to have a dismal prognosis. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of combined modality therapy on clinical outcome and to determine the prognostic impact of a "presurgical" staging system. ## METHODS. Bet
