Long-range van der WaaIs interactions have been studied in low-dimensional metals such as _gaphite and polyacetylene. These forces are qualitatively and quantitatively different from the sum of the usual l/r6 dispersion forces.

A surprising variety of "one-dimensional metals" have recently been shown to be stable, notably such polymeric phases as trans-polyacetylene
