✦ Synopsis
Vibrational relaxation is measured in amino acid crystals at various temperatures by picosecond CARS spectroscopy. Low-frequency (40-l 25 cm-') torsional modes, librons, have liietimes which can exceed 4 ns. The decrease in lifetime with libron frequency and with temperature is determined primarily by the density of states, which shifts to lower frequency in peptide crystals. * In principle X-ray crystallography could be performed with short X-ray pulses. tirrently it takes minutes or hours to accumulate sufficient data.
