✦ Synopsis

Long-lived components in glyoxal are considered to have been observed in the recent sensitized phosphorescence experiments reported by Ito and co-workers; this interpretation explains the apparent collision-free "intersystem crossing", which is inconsistent with the accepted idea that glyoxal behaves according to the weakly coupled small-molecule limit. Mode selectivity as well as rovibronic level selectivity is also interpreted.
