✦ Synopsis

Eingegangen am 10. 5.1983) I n search of the enzyme responsible for the oxidation of methanol by the facultative methylotrophic Acetobacter sp. MB 70 we were able to demonstrate coexistence of a methanol dehydrogenase known to exist in neutrophilic methylotrophic bacteria and of an alcohol dehydrogenase known to exist in acetic acid bacteria. Evidence is presented that both enzymes are bound to the exterior side of the cytoplasmic membrane. Whether or not, the two dehydrogenases compete in vivo for methanol remains to be clarified.
