✦ Synopsis
The shape of J-Au curves may depend on whether the test has been conducted under load control (LC) or under displacement control (DC). This is shown experimentally in two multi-specimen J,c tests of a low-strength structural steel. The fracture initiation toughness is the same in both cases but the LC test displays a steeper J-Au curve than the DC test. An explanation of the effect is presented. The effect can appear if the crack extension proceeds discontinuously.
