✦ Synopsis
A new family of ternary nitrides Ln 3 T 2؊x N 6 (Ln؍ rare earth; T؍ Nb or Ta, 04x40.2) has been successfully synthesized using Ga or Li 3 N as a 6ux. These compounds crystallize in the tetragonal space group I4/mmm (No. 139) with parameters a+4.05 A s and c؍ 20.2 A s . They are isostructural with the high T c superconducting cuprate La 2؊x Sr x CaCu 2 O 6 . Extended HuK ckel band structure calculations show that the nitrides contain conducting TN 2 layers similar to the CuO 2 layers. However, magnetic measurements performed on these ternary nitrides do not show any superconducting transition down to 4 K. 2001 Academic Press
