Mechanical oscillations can be propagated as sound waves in gaseous, liquid or solid mediums. How well they are transmitted depends on the nature ofthe medium. Sound waves behave similarly in liquids and gases, therefore, their propagation in these two mediums can be discussed together. Because extended liquids and gases cannot support shear stresses, only longitudinal waves in which the particle displacements are parallel to the direction ofpropagation can occur in them.
