Kierkegaard stated a view that can be expressed by this aphorism: We live forward, but we understand backward. It has struck me that this truism is nowhere more accurate than in the task of comprehending and working in treatment with those who have posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The traumatic event happened as someone was living forward; the task of integrating it into one's life narrative and making meaning requires looking backward.
