It would be helpful to have established predictors of who will bleed from varices. This is still an imprecise art, but helpful data are accumulating. For example, the 1988 study of 321 patients by the North Italian Endoscopic Club identified variceal size, Child-Pugh class and red wale markings on varices as prognosticators (9).
At this time my own choice for prophylactic treatment is a patient with relatively large varices who is judged likely to be compliant.
