A BP Chemicals initiative to minimise fugitive emissions from valves on its plants worldwide looks as though it will save the company more than £1 million per year in production costs.

BP Chemicals initiated the drive for better valve performance after measuring emissions from valve stems on plants in Europe and the US& Although they found that the emissions from the individual valves were small, the company operates several thousand valves across the world.

The primary aim of the valve performance improvement project was to reduce the overall impact on the environment by using the best valves in new plants and retrofitting existing valves with new packing around their stems.
