degree of energetic stabilization relative to that of their "conventional" isomers with trigonally planar carbon atoms can easily be approximated by experiment. This should provide a good basis from which to assess the results of quantum mechanical calculations carried out on such systems, and thus help us to obtain a realistic picture of the common factors which lead to the formation of stable compounds containing planar-tetracoordinate carbon atoms.
