✦ Synopsis

This chapter examines the organization of stone tool technology at the Lower Paleolithic site of Tsoana, Northeastern Namibia. This study employs a chaîne opératoire approach in order to address the relationship between Lower Paleolithic stone tool technology, mobility, and site use. The chapter argues that the observed archeological patterns of relatively short knapping sequences are not consistent with "home base" site use typical of modern forager residences. Instead, based on patterns of flake cortex and refitting, this study suggests that Lower Paleolithic archeological sites like Tsoana were combinations of geological palimpsests and non-domestic activity areas. The chapter explores several existing models of non-residential site use and stone tool accumulation in light of this evidence, and discusses concomitant theoretical implications.
