random dilTerenccs in the surface composition leading to slight differences in the slope. Furthermore, given that the number of bands decreases with time, the final configuration should have three bands because it is the smallest odd number above one which is the unrealistic case of no segregation at all.
We did not attempt any modeling for the mechanism of segregation in this study. However, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) studies are being carried out to obtain concentration, velocity, and diffusion data for flows producing axial segregation in a rotating cylinder. These data together with our earlier MRI measurements of Rows of monosize particles in a rotating cylinder (Nakagawa et al., 1993) will be very valuable for comparison with future theoretical models.
