✦ Synopsis
When ion-exchange takes place in the presence of a co-ion which reacts with one of the ions being exchanged, the rate of such an exchange is affected by the reaction. Equations are derived for the general situation and are applied to the H+/Na+-acetate-system. Limiting examples are illustrated. Using these equations, the results of some experiments on the acetate-system are correlated with earlier w&k on ion-exchange without reaction.
