✦ Synopsis

Abstraet--A series of thermotropic poly(2-n-alkyl-l,4-phenylene terephthalates) was synthesized and characterized for liquid crystalline properties by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and by use of a polarizing microscope. All members of the series, from the polymer with the n-hexyl to that with the n-dodecyl alkyl group, appeared to form smectic phases above their melting points. The effects of substituent and molecular weight on melting points and clearing temperatures were determined.
