New poly(m-phenylene 4,4Π-oxydiphthalimide)s containing various side chains, such as 6-(4-biphenylmethoxy)hexyloxy group and 6-(phenylphenoxy)hexyloxy isomers, were synthesized, giving thin films of a high quality. All the polyimides apparently were almost amorphous, but exhibited short-range orderi
Two series of brush polyimides (PIs) with various lengths of the bristles were studied as thin films using atomic force microscopy, optical retardation and linearly polarized infrared spectroscopy before and after rubbing, and their nematic liquid crystal (LC) aligning abilities were investigated: p
## Abstract We synthesized a series of polystyrene derivatives containing coumarin side groups using polymer analogous reactions. The liquidβcrystal (LC) alignment director for these polymer films was found to be perpendicular to the rubbing direction. The contrast ratio and anchoringβenergy values
