The Auger Observatory is a hybrid detector in which 3000 water Cherenkov detectors (WCD) operate in coincidence with atmospheric fluorescence detectors. Due to the limited duty cycle of the later the bulk of the data is provided by the surface detector array. Hence, the capacity of WCDs to discrimin

β¦ Synopsis
We are trying to obtain a suitable material to compose the lining of a water Cerenkov tmlk for the surface de-recto1, part of a hybrid detector of the Auger Project. Resulgs of tests were compared with DuPont 1073Tyvek T M and obtained a reasonable performance for (PVC+BaSO4) material.

The surface detector array of the Pierre Auger Observatory comprises 1600 water Cherenkov detectors distributed over an area of 3000 km 2 . The Cherenkov light is detected by three 9-in. photo-multiplier tubes from which the signals of the anode and last dynode are digitized by 10 bit 40 MHz FADCs.
This Letter describes the results of investigations into the mechanical losses of a selection of crystalline materials with the potential for use as the test masses in advanced gravitational wave detectors. We have measured loss factors of 3.7 = 10 y9 for HEM sapphire, to our knowledge the lowest me
An instrumental method for the measurement of the toxic value of preservatives against mould fungi on wood and wood products was tested as an alternative to the widely used visual method with its inherent disadvantage of subjectivity. The new criterion of effectiveness to be used was light reflectan
