โœฆ Synopsis

The conception of growth ratios for insects has been one which has stimulated the reasoning and imagination of investigators for years, resulting in the publication of numerous papers dealing with all phases of the problem. Growth formulae have been set up repeatedly, only to be discredited in the findings of subsequent workers and replaced with new theories. Generalizations have been made which would not apply to even the majority of insects. Probably in most instances these investigators were dealing with specific cases from which f a r reaching conclusions should not have been made. On the other hand, commentators and critics have often been responsible for the over emphasis of specific observations or the establishment of a premise not intended in the original work. Although analytical discussions and extensive bibliographies have appeared in the papers of Calvert ( '29), Ludwig ( '32, '34), Gaines and Campbell ( '35), Abercrombie ( '36), and Woodruff ( '38) among others, the literature dealing with this problem of insect life will soon need to be summarized carefully.
