Abstract
All components of the linear electrooptical and of the piezooptical tensor of hexagonal Al(IO3)3 · 2HIO3 · 6H2O have been determined for He-Ne radiation at 6328 Å by static methods.
The crystals possess large electrooptical constants r
113 and r
333. As both constants have the same sign, the maximal transversal electrooptical effect is only about half of the corresponding effect in KH2PO4. But the unusual piezooptical properties allow an application of these crystals as highly efficient acoustooptic deflectors and modulators of light in the visible spectrum.
