✦ Synopsis

We analyse Fe i lines observed during the 1961 eclipse at Bra6, Yugoslavia (see paper II: van Dessel et aL, 1973), using a computer program for the calculation of theoretical line intensities, which was described in Paper I (van Dessel, 1970). A few minor modifications to the physical input are discussed in Section 2. NLTE-coefficients, affecting the line absorption coefficient and the source function, are introduced and discussed in Section 3. Starting from coefficients derived from the combination Tel (HSRA) + Tex (Holweger), suitable distributions with height of the NLTE-coefficients are determined for the most striking cases among the observed lines. Only little deviation from the populations derived from Holweger's temperature distribution is needed to explain the observed line behaviour.

Eclipse observations of total line intensities (Cr ~: two groups of lines; Ti II, Fe II and Cr iI: two lines each) are interpreted in terms of departures from LTE. An interpretation is given of the observations of the continuous solar radiation in the spectral range 600-1700 A. The model allows for deviations from LTE of H, C, Si and S, and is in hydrostatic equilibrium. The predicted intensity from 1680 to 1520/~ has virtually no dependence on the electron te
