✦ Synopsis
The CH~ radicals as well as the CH radicals disappear for the greater part in a reaction with molecular oxygen:
Furthermore, by equating the rate of ion formation and the rate of ion recombination, an upper limit is found for the ion concentration in the flame reaction zone Indeed the ions also diffuse away from the flame front. Therefore n+ < (I/~Seo00 t

The value of the ion recombination coefficient 0~ has been determined by the technique of ion extraction and measurement of the ion concentration at different distances downstream of the flame front: a value of a --1.9 x 10 -7 has been found*.
A typical result can be presented concerning the stoichiometric methane-oxygen flame with 50 per cent nitrogen :Tr --2712°K, V~ --137.5 cm/sec; eo = 0.67 x 10 -2 cm; U+ = 3.76 x I017 ions/cm'~sec and r/-4.2 x 10 -6 ions per molecule CH, consumed.
