-A novel-type dual-probe measuring device for local measurements in bubble beds was developed and tested in a laboratory bubble column (0.152 m id.) within a wide range of gas flow rates. The measuring unit consists of an optical-fibre light transmission probe connected with the spectrophotometer HP-8452 and of an auxiliary light transmission probe employed for separate determination of the frequency of bubbles passage through the measuring region. Connection of the probe with the spectrophotometer enables measurements within a wide range of wave-lengths (340-820 nm) and on-tine data evaluation. Local gas holdup data were obtained from the values of light absorbance measured by the first probe and the average values of bubble chord length (vertical bubble dimension) were then calculated from respective values of local gas holdup and bubble frequency data determined at given working conditions by the auxiliary probe. An excellent agreement was observed between the values of bubble chord length obtained from our measurements and those determined previously by the photographic technique. Experimental tests proved that the light transmission probe in connection with HP-8452 spectrophotometer could be suitably used even for simultaneous determination of gas holdup and dyestuff concentration in coloured solutions as well as for detection of the boundary between bubble bed and foam.
