✦ Synopsis

A general theory of light scattering from a random collection of cylinder-symmetrical particles is developed. It is shown that this general theory contains all the special eases, such as infinitely thin rods, infinitely thin discs and isotropic rods with comparable lengthand thickness, known from literature. At the same time, the derived expression is constructed in such a way that it is easy to see the influence of different experimental arrangements of measurement so that the effect of non-ideal polarizer and analyser can be corrected for.
