✦ Synopsis

Light propagation in helicoidal structures is quite similar to wave propagation in crystal lattices: one obtains allowed frequency bands without attenuation separated by 'forbidden' frequency bands where waves are attenuated and cannot propagate. These attenuated waves have the algebraic form of Bloch waves. Rigorous treatment of helicoidal structures satisfactorily explains the observed selective reflection of light by cholesteric liquid crystals.
