✦ Synopsis
Single vlbromc lifetimes of two-photon excited states are measured in the low pressure limit for naphthalene. The twophoton spectrum, besxdes yieldmg new states in S 1, IS also free of the interference from the neghborhood of the Sz , known from one-photon experiments, and hence unperturbed lifetimes can be measured to higher excess energies. The overall pattern of hfetimes with excess energy mcludmg both one-photon and two-photon states shows that the wbronic structure is subordInate to an overdi monotonrc decrease, much as found ea.rIier for P-naphthylamine. This indicates, at least for naphthaiene, that radiatlonless processes mto trlplets are domlnsted by Franck-Condon factors and not by vibroruc reductions and promoting modes.
