Un jove estudiant de física, de gran talent però molt pobre, descobreix un mètode gràcies al qual pot tornar invisibles tots els teixits, fins els vius. Decidit a estudiar les possibilitats del seu invent, es sotmet ell mateix a l’experiment, però aquest no fa l’efecte que ell espera i, mentre que els seu cos es torna invisible, no passa el mateix amb els vestits que porta. Convertit en un ésser estrany i repulsiu, ha de fugir i amagar-se. Desesperat per la seva situació busca en va la manera de recobrar el seu aspecte normal.
