Bécquer, que con sus escasas «Rimas» elevó la lírica romántica a su mayor altura, también se mostró un gran poeta en sus «Leyendas». La fascinación que estos bellísimos textos producen no se debe sólo a su lirismo, sino a su atmósfera de irrealidad. Como ha dicho García-Viñó, «en el fondo lo que priva en las leyendas es una atmósfera ideal y de misterio. Bécquer suspira continuamente por lo inalcanzable». Pero lo que no se ha destacado bastante hasta ahora es su modernidad narrativa, su sentido cinematográfico del ritmo, esos fotogramas llenos de dinamismo, intensidad y brillantez y la teatralidad de algunas escenas.
