โฆ Synopsis
Last May this journal published an article by Sackett and Rosenberg. The authors indicated to the editors that they intended to publish a version of the Health Economics paper in a medical journal. In fact they have published it subsequently in a number of medical journals. This duplication has been identified and criticised by Drs Holdsworth and Crampin. We publish their letter below as well as the response of Sacketrand Rosenberg which was addressed to, and is published with the permission of, the editor of the Journal of the Xoyal Society of Medicine. The editors would welcome comments both on their decision to publish Sackett and Rosenberg in Health Economics and on the exchange below.
Dear Sir
When submitting original work in an attempt to contribute to the body of evidence required to inform the practice of evidence based medicine, unknown authors may find it difficult to have articles accepted. Could this be due in part to the triplication of material by well known and respected authors? We report as evidence, an article 'The need for evidence based medicine' which has appeared (word for word) in at least three journals in the last few months.'-3 Should we include this three times in our meta-analysis of expert opinion?
Readers may speculate as to whether we have submitted this letter to all three journals. GIUJAN HOLDSWORTH.
