โฆ Synopsis
Recently, Buser et al. reported
in the Journal of Biomedical Materials Research on their investigation concerning the relationship between surface characteristics and the degree of bone-implant integration.' Specifically, they reported on a histomorphometric study of hollow-cylinder commercially pure (cp) titanium implants press-fit into the femoral and tibia1 metaphyses of miniature swine for periods of 3 and 6 weeks. In approximately the order of increasing surface roughness the implant treatments included: electropolishing; medium (0.12-0.15 pm) particle grit-blasting and acid-pickling with large (0.25-0.50 pm) particle grit-blasting; large particle grit blasting and acid attack with HC1/H,S04; plasma-spraying with titanium; and plasma-spraying with hydroxyl-LETTERS TO THE EDITOR review of the published literature, they have not related their findings to the documented work of other investigators.
