I have delayed answering your letter regarding an editorial about research support of the AIUM since very few replies have been received. I have t o date received only three replies. This lack of interest combined with an apparent freeing up of NIH funds would appear to indicate a reduced problem in the area of ultrasonic research, and it is difficult t o know if the lack of research in the United States is of widespread concern or merely of intense interest to only a few of us.

A problem that ultimately proves of even more concern is that rumored ruling by the National Cancer Institute which would require future grants t o be delayed pending studies of toxic effects of ultrasound.
