Productivity improvement is a major-concern for those aiming to restore the United States to a leadership position in manufacturing. The integration of manufacturing processes into systems will provide momentum for increased productivity-and promises new, higher standards of efficiency, product quality, and cost effectiveness. Advancements are occurring at an accelerating rate, and the task of keeping informed is becoming particularly challenging.
arrives at a critical time. There is a need for a vehicle that will bring together international developments in manufacturing systems research, development, 'and implementation. The Journal will provide a forum for the discussion of these important areas-and also will stress the important link between each of the elements of the total process from design through planning and processing. In short, it will stress integration. The task before you, Dr. Bollinger, is to open new lines of communication--to bring together, and disseminate, information that relates to the improvement of manufacturing technology. I am confident that through the efforts of the Editorial Review Board, SME staff, and yourself, this new Journal will play a key role in the advancement of i manufacturing systems research. Congratulations on this fine effort.
