Letter to the Editor
Dr. Alsabi (1979) has described 28 adult patients with "acute myelogenous leukemia," all of whom had elevated serum lysozyme levels (98.6-212.4 pg/ml) before treatment. He reports only one patient with "monomyelocytic leukemia" as having the highest serum lysozyme level; namely, 3 18.9 pg/ml.
Virtually all other series distinguish between acute myeloblastic, acute myelomonocytic, and acute monocytic leukemia [eg, 1,2].
It is highly unlikely that all 28 patients had only myeloblastic morphology or no sig nificant percentage of sodium fluoride-inhibited esterase. Approximately 40-50% of such cases are myelomonocytic by standard cytochemical criteria. Moreover, attempts have been made to correlate morphology, lysozyme levels, and cytochemistry with response and survival [3] .
correlation between morphology and lysozyme levels.
