I am writing in regard to the manuscript, Laser Raman Spectrum of Calcified Human Aorta, by Klug et al., which appeared in Lasers in Surgery and Medicine (12:13-17 (1992)). I want to call to your attention the inaccuracy of the statement in the abstract that "These are the first reported spectra obtained in air or in normal saline solution showing the hydroxyapatite peak in calcified plaque for samples which were untreated except for freezing, which is encouraging for the application of Raman spectroscopy." In fact, our laboratory achieved this result in 1990, and it was published in March of 1991 in Spectrochemica Acta. The work was discussed in a number of standard forums throughout 1991, including the Engineering Foundation Conference on lasers in surgery and medicine, CLEO, and the American Heart Association meeting, and abstracts were published in each case.
