✦ Synopsis

Having recently made the same error, I wish to draw your attention to the paper by Wright et al. entitled 'Detection of herpes simplex virus DNA in spontaneous abortions from HIV-positive women using non-isotopic in situ hybridization'.' I believe that these cases are not of herpes infection; what the authors have observed are the biotin-containing intranuclear inclusions that are not uncommonly present in gestational tissues. This phenomenon has recently been described by Yokohama et aL2 and Sickel and di Sant'Agne~e.~ Since these inclusions contain biotin, immunohistochemistry and in situ hybridization using biotinylated signals will lead to false staining.
