โœฆ Synopsis

The purpose of this letter is to report the existence of a mode of linear vibration in Timoshenko's beam theory which has escaped attention in the literature. In particular, for various boundary conditions, a condition in terms of the material and geometric parameters of the beam for its existence is established. Our work is related to those of Traill-Nash and Collar [1] and Downs [2] on simply supported beams, and Mindlin and Deresiewicz [3] on infinite beams.
