The journal Optical Fiber Technology, launched in mid-1994 by Academic Press, completed its third volume in 1997. Together, these three volumes present more than 1000 printed pages and about 150 contributed and invited papers from 510 authors involved in fiber-optic communications and sensing. 1 Since the launching of OFT, manuscripts have been received from 27 countries; three quarters of the manuscripts are distributed approximately as follows: 45% from Western Europe, 16% from North America, and 13% from Japan. 2 Consistently, 70% of contributing authors are in academia and 30% in industry, illustrating OFT's strong educational vocation and applied research focus. The above statistics show that OFT can no longer be viewed as a ''new'' journal. However, future volumes must have sustained quality standards if OFT is to pass the trial of time and establish its reputation in the research community.
