โฆ Synopsis
With the first issue of this second volume, Optical Fiber Technology is celebrating its first anniversary. Thanks are extended to the fiber-optic research community for a very encouraging response to our first presentation, in fall 1994, of the journal's team and goals and to our first call for papers. Thanks are also extended to the Associate Editors and the Editorial Board for doing the tedious work involved in the manuscript refereeing process, as well as for propositioning invited paper topics. Thanks finally are given to Academic Press, whose efficiency made it possible to complete the first volume with an average paper turnaround of 6ยฝ months per issue (see the Editor's Report which follows this letter). To date, institutions in both industry and academia located in more than 20 countries in the Americas, Europe, Asia, and Oceania have subscribed and submitted manuscripts, which confirms the international character of Optical Fiber Technology. We are also pleased to announce that Optical Fiber Technology will be available this year on Internet.
Aside from the fast publication of regular-length papers of high scientific quality and originality, the other basic mission of Optical Fiber Technology is to provide information on the state of the art in "hot" applications of the field, in the form of invited or review articles. Eight such reviews were published in Volume 1, an average of two papers per issue. We hope that the insights and materials contained in invited papers will help the growing community of graduate and undergraduate students through their beginning careers. They should also convey most of the information on developments otherwise provided at international conferences (this should be beneficial to institutions unable to attend due to budget considerations).
