✦ Synopsis
Follow the fortunes of two women from the same family.
Letty has been in love with Lord Archibald since the moment she saw him when she was fourteen. They attempted to elope in the teeth of her family’s opposition two years later but were thwarted by his elder brother, the Earl of Stonegate, and she has been more or less a prisoner in her own home ever since. Now twenty, she accepts an offer of marriage from none other than Lord Stonegate and sets off to visit him.
She is accompanied by her Aunt Aspasia, who also eloped when she was sixteen - more successfully, at least in so far as that pair managed to reach Gretna Green without interference. Aspasia finds chaperoning a volatile young woman more taxing than she had expected, and Letty finds embarking on a new life promises less joy than she had hoped.
Will their painful pasts and bruised hearts recover sufficiently to allow them to enjoy lasting happiness?
