✦ Synopsis

PRRI is a worldwide initiative of public sector scientists who conduct research in modern biotechnology for the public good.

The 'raison d'être' of PRRI is to offer public researchers a forum to be informed about and to be involved in international regulations and discussions. Detailed information about PRRI can be found on www.pubresreg.org.

One of the main objectives of PRRI is to assist decision makers in making informed and balanced decisions about biotechnology, by providing factual information about modern biotechnology, and to inform regulators and policymakers about the impact of regulations and policies on public research in modern biotechnology.

Since its establishment, PRRI has focused mainly on participating in the Meetings of the Parties to Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety and the Convention on Biological Diversity.

Since its establishment in 2004, PRRI has become a wellrecognised organisation in the international arena.

PRRI is currently expanding its scope of activities to other areas, and in 2009, the focus is on the EU regulations. PRRI is deeply concerned that there is an increasing tendency with EU decision makers to ignore the law, science the broader agricultural context in decision-making. This is a highly undesirable situation that has serious negative impacts within as well as outside the EU. PRRI plans to organise a meeting with key EU policy makers in November 2009, to discuss these issues.
