Martin Beck est appelé à témoigner au procès d'une jeune femme

porno. La justice suédoise, prétendument exemplaire, se révèle partiale
et d'une effrayante médiocrité. Parallèlement, Beck est chargé de la
protection d'un impopulaire sénateur américain en visite à Stockholm ;
mais Gunvald Larsson, de retour d'un traumatisant voyage en Amérique
Latine, est convaincu qu'un groupe de terroristes est décidé à saisir
cette occasion pour commettre un attentat spectaculaire. Ce dernier
volume du Roman d'un crime, à certains égards tragiquement visionnaire
est aussi le livre le plus politique de Sjöwall et Wahlöö. Outre la
dénonciation " citoyenne " des institutions, les auteurs s'attaquent à
la social-démocratie suédoise, hypocrite, manipulatrice et profiteuse.
