Abstract

In a recent paper, Hamilton examined the distribution of very warm spells and very cold spells at Edgbaston, Birmingham, during the period 1920–1979. The present paper takes the analysis of these data further by modelling them with a simple statistical distribution, namely the geometric distribution. It is shown that this distribution provides a good fit to the lengths of both warm and cold spells, although there is clear seasonal variation in the mean of the distribution.
