✦ Synopsis

The magnetic field dependence of the triplet yield of biradicals of the type 2A*-(CH2).-2D-has been calculated for three different lengths n = 8,9, and 10 of the linking aliphatic chain. The calculations are based on the solution of the stochastic Liouville equation under the assumption of a "through space" exchange interaction and compare well with experimental observations. We show that the field dependence of the triplet yield is governed by the "spectrum of the exchange interaction".

A pronounced solvent viscosity and polarity dependence of the magnetic field effect was found for polymethylene-linked radical ion pairs generated by photoinduced intramolecular electron transfer in compounds of the type pyrene-(CH\*),-N,N-dimethylaniline, with n = 7-16.
