✦ Synopsis
Chronic partial bladder outlet obstruction was created in niini-pigs by iiriplanting a 6-7 iiini ring around the proximal urethra. Aftcra median obstruction p e r i d of 63 days, the ring was removed and after a median recovery period of 60 days the animals were sacriliced. At each occasion \tepwise cystonietry. iiieasurenient of residual urine, muscle strips studies with electrical and carbachol stimulation, and stereological estimations of length density and total length 0 1 acetylcholinesterase positive nerves were performed. The results can be suinmarized as follows. ( I ) unchanged sensitivity o f muscle strips to carbachol, but iiiarkedly decreased contractility and rate of contraction t o carhachol, (2) n o evidence of detrusor instability. but severely deconipensatcd bladders in two pigs. ( 3 ) a significant increase in residual volume. ( 4 ) a pronounced decrease in length density and total length o f acctylcholinehterasc positive nerves. and ( 5 ) at field stimulation strips from sonic pigs showed increased sensitivity and contractility with high atropine and TTX resistance. while strips from the other pigs revealed decreased sensitivity and markedly decreased contractility t o clctrical stimulation. In general. most o f the changes were markedly. though incompletely, rebersed after recovery. Light and electron microscopy of muscle strips showed no histological o r ultrastructural changes during the experiments or after storing I day at 4°C. IWS Wtlc)-i.~. Inc
