Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz’s theory of modality takes a special place within early modern philosophy. Leibniz analyzes the notions of possibility and necessity in much greater detail than his contemporaries. Sebastian Bender reconstructs the metaphysical foundations of this conception of modality and shows how closely intertwined it is with Leibniz’s rationalism and theism.
