✦ Synopsis
The behavior of the reversed miceUar system of lecithin in benzene in the presence of water has been investigated using lanthanide NMR shift reagents and two oxygenated chlorinated hydrocarbon pesticide systems as both reporter molecules and amphiphilic ligands. Increased solubilization of these hydrocarbons in benzene in the presence of lecithin was observed with concomitant deshielding of aromatic proton signals. The experiments indicate that th6 deshielding may not be due to interactions with lecithin bound phosphate groups but may be forced electrostatic interactions of an intermolecular type. Negligible solubility of these hydrocarbons in benzene was observed in the presence of lecithin in which the anions associated with choline have been partially replaced with the 2,2-bis(4-chlorophenyl) acetate ion.
