✦ Synopsis

Several authors have noticed poor ÿnite sample behavior of the most widely used parametric variogram estimator by Cressie (1985). This behavior is most notable in the case that ÿtting is done on the collection of squared di erences of observations from all point pairs, the so-called variogram cloud. This can indeed be made plausible by asymptotical considerations and these motivate a corresponding simple correction. An alternative, even more e cient computer-intensive estimator is also proposed. The beneÿts of both methods are demonstrated by Monte-Carlo simulation.

Problems arising in nonlinear least squares fitting of the first part of the lognormal curve to data are analysed. No evidence of the existence of multiple local minima of the sum of squares has been found. However, it is demonstrated that severe convergence problems might arise, especially ifthe da
